What Does Fish Oil Do?
|
|
Have you ever asked yourself, "what
does fish oil do for people?" Have you wondered if it's just a
fad, or is it really good ...
|
Fish oil
has become a popular product, which means that it's either highly
effective or it's heavily promoted and may just be the latest
ineffective dietary fad. It doesn't sound too appetizing, and then you
hear about how many people "burp up" the fish oil and you can imagine
how that tastes and smells! But, doctors and nutritionists are now
generally in favor of people taking fish oil capsules (and there are
now non-burp kinds). So...what does fish oil do, according to research
and observation?
inflammation is widely believed to be the true
cause of cancer...
Fish oils mainly work by supplying
high levels of Omega-3 fatty
acids.
And one of their benefits is to reduce inflammation.
It's shocking to discover how
many people live with pain on a daily basis. Very often, this pain is
caused by internal inflammation. With fish oil supplements, pain is
reduced. But there's something perhaps even more important:
inflammation is now widely believed to be the true cause of all
cancers. With inflammation's reduction, the risk of getting cancer or
having it advance is greatly diminished.
- Fish oils increase your "good" cholesterol levels (which you need
for
a healthy heart, liver, and brain) while reducing your "bad"
cholesterol (the kind that over the years puts that clogging plaque on
your arterial walls, giving you heart disease and a high risk of having
a stroke).
- Speaking of the brain-benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids, taking
fish
oil
supplements is demonstrated to improve your concentration powers, your
memory, and your mental endurance.
- Pregnant women who eat fish
regularly or take fish oil supplements tend to give birth to more
intelligent children.
- In children who have ADD,ADHD , or autism,
research has demonstrated that if they are given fish oil
supplementation or more fish in their diets, these disorders can be
diminished or even done away with entirely. (Fish Oil Health Benefits)
- Fish oil supplements have been proven to be able to reduce the
symptoms of psychosis and manic-depressive behaviors, and alleviate
clinical depression. (See: Fish oil and depression)
So, these are the things that answer the question of "what do fish
oils
do?" Now--what should you look for when considering buying them?
When buying fish oil supplements
You really don't need fish oil
supplements if you eat plenty fish and
seafood. If you enjoy these foods, simply start eating a little more of
them, replacing one or two of your usual red meat, pork, or poultry
dishes with seafood protein dishes each week. However, if you don't
like fish, then supplements are right for you.
- The supplements you choose should be "species specific". That is,
the
label tells you where the oils come from. It should say salmon,
anchovies, tuna, or sardines, which are the richest sources of Omega-3
oils. If the label doesn't mention any of these by name, don't buy that
product.
- Many people find the best fish oil supplement to be that derived
from
wild, cold water salmon. Farm-raised salmon are fed a different diet
and aren't as rich in the Omega-3 content as a result. One of the most
impressive supplements we've discovered is Xtend-Life's
Omega 3 Esters made from high quality Fish-Oils.
- There are eight Omega-3 fatty acids: ALA, DPA, DHA, EPA, ETA,
ETA(3),
HPA, and SDA. If you can, choose a supplement that gives you a good
balance of all eight of these.
So, to sum up: the question of "what do fish oils do?" has been
answered, and now you should be able to act upon your knowledge. And
then you'll be able to answer people from first hand experience when
they ask you about what do fish oils do for you.
