With all the attention that natural health remedies receive these days, it's sometimes hard to sift out fact from fiction.  This article will help ....

These days, more and more people are turning to natural health remedies for their ailments and health maintenance. Furthermore, natural remedies and supplements are being touted by more doctors and nutritionists, too.

There is the old adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", and that's part of the underlying philosophy of natural health remedies, as opposed to the heavy use of synthetic pharmaceuticals or highly invasive and expensive surgeries. There are appropriate and necessary times to use pharmaceuticals, just as there are times when surgery is needed for something, but the truth is that we are vastly over-prescribing medications, and we are not coming close to avoiding surgery or the need for it as much as we could and should.

Even if we are already sick or injured, often times natural remedies work just as well as drugs or invasive bodily treatment would, and they do so without the terrible side effects of those methods. There are plenty of records of cases where people have reversed and cured their own cancer without the use of any chemical or pharmaceutical therapy at all (note: this can only be accomplished if the cancer is diagnosed early enough). And we can get our heart and our arteries back into a healthy state with a very low risk of heart attack or stroke without relying on bypass surgery and  medicants.

The most important component of natural remedies is making them part of our lifestyle -- and the sooner, the better. A Zen Buddhist proverb quips, "Do things now, while they are easy." It is best for us to get into healthy living attitudes and practices before we are sick, before we are starting to be ravaged by the effects of aging. In fact, with healthy living we prevent very large amounts of illness and disease, we have endless vitality right up to our final days of life, and we increase our longevity.

What should our natural remedies entail?

  • Diet. Diet is first and foremost. This is pretty simple, but many people find it difficult because of modern trends.

    • Stay away from processed foods,

    • only eat fast foods as a treat, and

    • get a good balance of eggs, fish, and land animal meats for your protein instead of always eating red meat, hot dogs, etc.

    • Eat your fresh fruits and raw or lightly steamed veggies.

    • Eat whole grains, not "white" grains.

    • Use brown sugar, not white sugar.

    • Use sea salt, not that cooked table salt.

  • Supplements. Supplements are crucial for optimal health. These may be enzymatic, herbal, or vitamins and minerals.

    • One of the best herbal supplements is ginseng.

    • A powerful vitamin supplement is blue-green algae (don't worry, you don't have to taste it!).
