Benefits of L-tyrosine

L-tyrosine (often abbreviated as TYR) is a standard aromatic amino acid. This amino acid is present in a variety of proteins which play key roles in the system such as antibodies, enzymes and hormones.

People suffering from a condition called phenylketouria cannot metabolize phenylalanine. People suffering from kidney diseases are also most likely to be deficient in this amino acid. Children suffering from malnutrition also require supplements. For such people, tyrosine supplements are a must.

TYR is involved in protein synthesis as well as in the synthesis of catecholamines epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, the thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine, and the pigment melanin. One of the important benefits is its antidepressant activity. This is because it is the precursor of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine. Elevated levels of these neurotransmitters have been shown to have repress anxiety, depression and frustration. It is also claimed that it alleviates the symptoms of Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS. Also improves alertness, libido and causes a slight loss of appetite. Some people take this supplement instead of coffee in the morning for that extra zing.

L-tyrosine is absorbed from the small intestine by a sodium-dependent active transport process. It is transported to the liver subsequently via the portal circulation. It is then involved in many biochemical, oxidative and other chemical reactions. It is not metabolized in the liver. It is distributed via the systemic circulation to the various tissues of the body.

Natural sources of are principally derived from animal and vegetable proteins. Vegetables, fruits and their juices contain small amounts of the free amino acid. The free amino acid is also found in fermented foods such as yogurt and buttermilk. Dairy products, meats, fish, oats and wheat are some of the riches sources of this amino acid. Vitamin B6, folic acid and copper are necessary for the conversion to TYR into neurotransmitters and patients are asked to take vitamin B complex supplements when they are on L-tyrosine supplements. L-tyrosine generally has no side effects but some people have reported insomnia, heart palpitations, restlessness and nervousness as a side effect. Hence, you should consult a physician before taking any supplements.
