Facts to remember in buying Fish Oil Supplements
A careful balance between Omega 3 and Omega 6 supplementation
needs to occur in order for the Omega 3 fatty acids to provide benefit
to the body, the best balance is 4 portions of Omega 3 to 1 Omega
6.
Since the typical western diets combine these fatty acids at a
ratio of 10 to 1 you'll want to look for fish oil tablets with a lesser
amount of Omega 6.
It is thought that overuse of Omega 6 fatty acids can
increase cancer risk, heart attacks, stroke, arthritis and obesity.
Fish oil tablets should contain both eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). One to two grams of fish oil is
recommended every day for optimal health and Omega 6 balancing.
Fish oil mainly works by supplying high levels of Omega-3
fatty acids and one of their chief benefits is to reduce inflammation
They also increase your "good" cholesterol levels, which
contribute to a healthy heart, liver, and brain while reducing your
"bad" cholesterol.
If you eat plenty of fish and seafood you'll need little in the
way of supplements, however, if these are not a regular and frequent part
of your diet, you'll likely want to add a fish oil supplement to your
routine.
The supplements you choose should be "species specific" in which
the label tells you where the oils come from such as salmon,
anchovies, tuna, sardines or other fish with high levels of Omega 3
oils. If the label doesn't mention any of these by name, you
might want to look for another brand.
